I experimented with some street food today- keep your fingers crossed, so far so good. For lunch we walked down the main drag and stopped at a sandwich food vendor- he had real Italian loaf bread (bread is very rare here!) There is one option at this vendor- tofu, chicken, butter sauce and mushroom paste on loaf bread with pickles and cabbage on the side. I got this for $1.50. Who would've thought I would've traveled halfway around the world just to try tofu! It wasn't half bad. There was also a vendor with deep fried bananas-- AMAZING! will definitely be enjoying those again tomorrow. For dinner we stopped at a fried chicken vendor and I was able to get a tender, white meat chicken breast for 75 cents!
I also had to stop at the supermarket today because tomorrow is party day in my classroom-- the school asked that we bring chips and not cookies or candy, so while I was at the store I came across squid flavored potato chips. Yep, you read that correctly folks, squid!! As much as I wanted to get them, I held off and purchased plain pringles. So boring. As of now, the score stands at: Vendors 3, supermarket 0.
All of my finger are crossed!
ReplyDeleteYou got lunch and dinner for less than the cost of a can of pringles?!
Hmmmm, interesting assortment of food offered at the street vendor with cabbage on the side, not rice....and bread...still so inexpensive even though it's uncommon there :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE chips in any shape and form....so much so it's become a running joke between me and Uncle Dave....but I'd have to agree...smart move to pass on the squid flavored chips!!
