Christmas Eve at the Christmas Market

Monday, 24 December, 2018 (Christmas Eve!)

We decided to spend the day in the Christmas Market (it seemed the appropriate thing to do since it is Christmas Eve and all). There are tons and tons of food stalls. In order to make sure we didn't miss anything we walked around the whole market scoping out our options.

We eventually decided on a massive sausage stuffed with sweet peppers. It came with bread and mustard and 2 HUGE PICKLES (Merry Christmas to me!) They had picnic tables set up around the stalls so we sat at one while we ate. It was insanely windy and cold but we managed.

Next it was time to hit up the vendor stalls. They were selling everything from homemade cards to kitchen utensils to jewelry to leather bags to wooden carvings. We perused but didn't make any purchases.

We found a small indoor cottage (whatever Hungarian constructed that in the middle of this outdoor market is a complete genius!) and popped inside for some hot chocolate and mulled wine. The wind got the best of us so we bought a chimney cake (a very popular Christmas dessert in Hungary) and a strudel to go.

We enjoyed our sweet treats in the warmth of our hostel where we met a friend, Jesus. We came to learn that he is living at the hostel while completing his masters at one of the local universities. So I guess we weren't totally alone there (score, I think?) After calling mom and dad to wish them a Merry Christmas we went to dinner with Jesus. However, because it was Christmas Eve most places were closed and those that weren't were mostly reservation only. We walked and walked and finally came to a bar that had packed tables but available bar stools. We convinced the bartender to let us eat at the bar and ordered some beers while we waited. He told us that our food would be 50+ minutes but it was better than having no food at all. Mark and I ordered a burger and traditional meat with noodles to split. Both were delicious. After, Jesus took us to one of his favorite ruin bars, Instant, which was like a giant circus inside.

We enjoyed one another's company and toasted to Christmas Eve as we sipped shitty beer in a shitty bar. Merry Christmas Eve to all, and to all a good night.

(Keep in mind however, that no night is complete without a late night snack. #24hoursubway #eatfresh)
