Teacher's Day is celebrated in all of the schools and universities in Albania. It marks the anniversary of the opening of the first desegregated, secular Albanian school in what was then known as the Ottoman Empire in the year 1887. To celebrate students bring their teachers flowers. At Kings the administration honored the teachers by announcing that student attendance would be half day and then treating all of the teachers to a traditional Albanian lunch at Mullixhiu. I rode in the backseat of Mr. Fatmir's car with Xhessi and Ms. Eva (the head of primary).
When we arrived at lunch we were greeted with fresh pomegranate juice and red wine. The dishes were delicious- we had an assortment of cold cut meats and cheeses, salads, warm meats with vegetables and potatoes and a traditional dessert known as salep. The salep comes in a personal teapot with a small crunchy piece of baklava. Spending time in a beautiful, traditional restaurant with all of my co-workers was a really fun end to my first Albanian Teacher's Day.
