Today is a Buddhist holiday in Thailand called Asahna Bucha Day. Jenna and I went to a teaching center to learn about the holiday from a British Monk. 2,500 years ago today, Buddha gave his people the Four Noble Truths (the basis for the Buddhist religion) during his sermon, Setting the Wheel of Dhamma in Motion. Thais celebrate by making merit (giving food offerings to monks), meditating, praying and chanting, abstaining from alcohol and by closing schools and businesses. At the teaching center, we practiced traditional chanting. These chants are incredibly lengthy and were very difficult for Jenna and I to catch on to. Thai children begin learning these at a very young age and can recite them from memory during their adult years. After chanting we practiced the art of meditation and finally, gave a food offering to the monks who were gathered at the learning center. Jenna and I both enjoyed learning about the holiday and getting a chance to take part in celebrating in an authentic way.
We couldn't stay authentic for too long however, because on our walk home we discovered a New York Style bagel cafe. How could we not? Our bagels were absolutely delicious! We continued exploring and found a cafe with phenomenal teas and coffees. We hunkered down to plan our excursion to Ayyuthaya.
After enjoying our drinks and planning our trip, we decided to treat ourselves with massages. What better way to celebrate the day off from work?
And finally, we ended our day at a renowned burger spot, known as Burgers and Bangers. It was definitely everything it was cracked up to be!
